Exciting News!

I have some very exciting news to share. We are home owners again! Woohoo! Finding the perfect home for our family has been challenging. We had to take Scarlett into consideration with every detail. She has very specific needs. We tried looking at two-story homes and realized that would never work. She is too heavy to carry up and down stairs. We considered putting in an elevator but that would've been too costly. We came to the conclusion that we needed a ranch home, on flat land, close to the hospital and family. That is exactly what we found.

There is still a lot of work that needs to be done. We don't plan on moving in for at least 4 months because we have to modify the home for Scarlett and make repairs. To modify the house, we will need to first widen doorways so that her wheelchair can fit through. All of the carpets must be torn up and replaced with some type of hardwood so that her wheelchair can easily move around. Wheelchair ramps to enter and exit the home will need to be installed. Some type of generator must be put in place for power outages. Scarlett has medical equipment that does not have a battery so backup power is a necessity. We will also need to make the bathroom handicapped accessible. I have had a horrible time bathing Scarlett in a traditional bathtub. She has been injured once and I'm worried about my back. She is now 30 lbs and lifting her is becoming more difficult. We plan on doing most of the work ourselves because of budget. I should clarify and say RYAN plans on doing most of the work while I care for Scarlett. We have a lot of family members that offered to help too! I am budgeting 4 months for these projects but I realize it might take a little longer.

We are considering doing a fundraiser to help with the home modifications but I'm not sure how to go about it. I will let you know if we come up with something.

We are so happy that we are able to "plant some roots" in Cincinnati. I will try to post some pictures of the house so you can see our progress. If anyone has ideas for modifying the house please let me know.

I am so excited for you all! Wishing I lived closer so we could lend a hand. The house we are in we have done just about it all! Let us know soon what type of fundraiser you will be doing. If it is an auction style I have items to donate. :)

Scarlett- We are still sick here. I am battling a cold, Noah still has a cough and Clara had a mystery fever yesterday. I dont want to send that with your package. The lesson learned...dont tell you I have a package to send until it is at the post office. Sending you love hugs and the sweetest of sugary kisses. ;)

We LOVE you guys living here in Cincy!!! Your new home will be adorable when you are all done. Sorry I'm not much of a worker bee, but I am a good "gofer' and excellent at taking back broken DVDs. Also I am a great cookie dispenser. And pie maker & I make delicious Wedding cakes. Scarlett will enjoy her new home & be able to be with you more as you go about your day. Love to all

My name is Trey Russell and our son, Nathan, was SMA Type 1 as well. In 2005, we built a handicap-accessible home for Nate, which he was able to enjoy until he passed away on April 28, 2010. My wife, Jennifer, and I would be happy to share some of the things we did and some things we learned about afterward. Please check out Nate's blog:

Thanks,
Trey
