Yes, you read that correctly. Scarlett is going to be a preschooler in the fall. We are so excited for her!
This is defiantly something we never thought would happen for her. When Scarlett was diagnosed with SMA the hospital advised us "to go home and love her." I remember the day that we got her diagnosis like it was yesterday. I immediately got on the Internet and read the statistics. Those horrible statistics... Telling me all of the things that my daughter couldn't and wouldn't do... Telling me all of the milestones she wouldn't hit... Telling me that she wasn't likely to live to see her 2nd Birthday... There wasn't a lot of positive information about life with SMA type 1. It all sounded pretty horrible. It wasn't until I reached out to the SMA community that I realized that SMA kids can have full lives and DO reach milestones. It's just not the way that I had pictured it in my head.
I am so proud to put a huge check mark next to registering for preschool.
We finished working on Scarlett's IEP yesterday and she will officially be a preschooler at Madeira in August. Madeira City Schools has been more than accommodating. They really want to help Scarlett learn and experience what other kids her age get to do. We have had three meetings with the school and they have been so accepting of our situation. They have never once made us feel guilty or uncomfortable for having a special needs child. They have made us feel so welcomed. They just really want to help Scarlett learn which is so refreshing. They have focused on what Scarlett CAN do and how we can use those skills to improve her communication skills and cognitive abilities. I can tell that they are all very excited to work with Scarlett. They have so many ideas!
Scarlett will have a teacher come out to our home once a week. She will also have interactions with other preschoolers and another teacher through Skype and/or videos. We are still strategizing and trying to figure out what will work best for Scarlett. The school also has an OT and PT that will come out to the house to work with her. I almost forgot to mention that one of Scarlett's teachers is also a speech therapist. Isn't that cool?
I am so excited for my soon to be preschooler. She has a great team through Madeira schools and I know she's going to make us all proud.
They all came out to the house to meet Scarlett. One of her teachers brought her drawings from the other preschoolers. Scarlett loved looking at them. They also brought out the cutest stuffed animal. Scarlett likes to pet it. It's very soft.
I will make a lot of posts throughout the school year so that you can see what she's working on. Isn't this all so exciting?

God is good! How about emailing this entry to all those Docs who were so negative about your precious darling. And, the best revenge is living well. Love to all, Mom
